The origin of the name
Sarah Margaret Dawsey was born in Piracicaba, São Paulo. She was the daughter of an American religious minister. She lived in Brazil until the age of fourteen, when she moved to the U.S.A. in order to study. Later, she graduated in pedagogy, did her master degree and specialized in child education at the University of Columbia. In 1941,Bennett school, in Rio de Janeiro, was looking for a missionary who knew Brazil, spoke Portuguese and was an educator. So, they invited Sarah Dawsey to start a course on teacher`s education. These teachers who took the course were specialized in teaching kindergarten school and dealing with children from ages 3 to 6.
At that time,school used to begin at the age of seven. And this kindergarten school became famous. Other educators were interested in learning the new techniques which Sarah Dawsey had brought from the U.S.A. They wanted to use these techniques with younger kids.
Sarah Dawsey was the principal of the kindergarten department of Bennett School for 10 years and the headmaster of the whole school for another 15 years. She used to guide the students firmly but friendly and she taught the teachers how to guide their young kids the same way.
In 1965, she retuned to the U.S.A. and founded the first school on children education at the Columbia College. Nowadays, she lives in Columbia, in South Carolina. In 1993 and 1995, she was honoured for the good services she had offered to the University of Columbia and to the population of South Carolina. She was also honoured as the patron of Sarah Dawsey School because of everything she has done for the education withso much wisdom and ideal.
